Nanoparticle delivery of grape seed-derived proanthocyanidins to airway epithelial cells dampens oxidative stress and inflammation

Abstract: BackgroundChronic respiratory diseases, whose one of the hallmarks is oxidative stress, are still incurable and need novel therapeutic tools and pharmaceutical agents. The phenolic compounds contained in grape are endowed with well-recognized anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-aging activities. Considering that natural anti-oxidants, such as proanthocyanidins, have poor water solubility and oral bioavailability, we have developed a drug delivery system based on solid lipid nanoparticles (SL… Show more

“…The experiments were carried out in triplicate. The in vitro cytotoxicity of cwSLNs and Cur-cwSLNs were performed with L929 cells using the MTT assay as described previously [18]; the concentrations of cwSLNs and Cur-cwSLNs were set to be 1, 5, 10, 20, and 50 µg/mL.…”

“…The authors pointed long-term persistence and stability inside cells and liberation of proanthocyanidins. Their results create a path for novel anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant therapies for chronic respiratory diseases [83].…”

“…SLNs were taken up in a dose-dependent manner and persisted in cells up to 16 days. Further, SLNs were stable at 4 °C in double-distilled water for up to 2 months [ 109 ]. Carvalho et al prepared SLNs containing carvacrol using a fusion-emulsification method.…”
