Nanopattern-stimulated superconductor-insulator transition in thin TiN films

Abstract: We present the results of the comparative study of the influence of disorder on transport properties in continuous and nanoperforated TiN films. We show that nanopatterning turns a thin TiN film into an array of superconducting weak links and stimulates both, the disorder-and magnetic field-driven superconductor-to-insulator transitions, pushing them to lower degree of disorder. We find that nanopatterning enhances the role of the two-dimensional Coulomb interaction in the system transforming the originally in… Show more

“…Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature T BKT of the film down to temperatures lower than those of present experiment 12 , and thus unbound vortices and antivortices move freely under the applied current leading to finite resistance. Upon increasing magnetic field, R(B) of the film develops a dip around 0.4 T, which again becomes very pronounced at lowest temperatures.…”

“…It is known that regular square arrays of BCS-type superconductors in the shape of crosses [1,2], dots [3], or anti-dots [4,5] on top of both metallic and insulating substrates have been investigated on varied length scales. In particular, the zero-temperature phase can be tuned to a conductor [3] and an insulator [5] by making the distance between grains larger than the coherence length.…”
