Nanoshell-Enabled Photonics-Based Imaging and Therapy of Cancer

Abstract: Metal nanoshells are a novel type of composite spherical nanoparticle consisting of a dielectric core covered by a thin metallic shell which is typically gold. Nanoshells possess highly favorable optical and chemical properties for biomedical imaging and therapeutic applications. By varying the relative the dimensions of the core and the shell, the optical resonance of these nanoparticles can be precisely and systematically varied over a broad region ranging from the near-UV to the mid-infrared. This range inc… Show more

“…These trends in the nanoshell tunability have already been experimentally exploited by the Halas group for a dual cancer imaging and therapy approach. 24,25,91 Size-Normalized Absorption and Scattering Cross-sections. The absolute magnitude of the optical cross-section does not provide a reliable measure for the optical properties of an ensemble of nanoparticles employed in real-life biomedical applications because smaller particles can be loaded in a given volume in greater numbers as compared to particles of a larger size.…”

“…Last, the Au coatings are especially attractive because of the possibility of conjugating the particles with specific molecules such as antibodies, specific ligands, thiol functional groups and therapeutic drugs, opening up prospects for targeted molecular imaging (20). An additional imaging modality built into our nanoconstruct is the optical thermal conversion capability making these structures highly suited for photothermal therapy (32,(38)(39)(40)(41).…”

“…Nanoshells are another type of metal nanostructures with interesting optical properties useful for various applications [59][60][61][62][63]. These structures, which are typically made of spherical silica cores surrounded by a layer of noble metal aggregates, have variation in size, shape and surface morphology due to the random nature of aggregation [64,65].…”
