Nanostructured Cu/ZnO Coupled Composites: Toward Tunable Cu Nanoparticle Sizes and Plasmon Absorption

Abstract: We report a synthesis method that made use of a dual-glycol system, allowing discrete and size-tunable Cu nanoparticles to be deposited onto ZnO nanorods. Successful reduction of Cu was demonstrated by the distinct plasmon absorption, and we report for the first time a clear linear correlation of Cu plasmon peak position shifts with the variation of Cu particle sizes. Stable and discrete Cu nanoparticles were obtained despite deliberately leaving out conventional polymeric protecting agents such as poly-(vinyl… Show more

“…Fresh The band appeared between 530 and 650 nm is associated to the plasmonic absorption of metallic copper particles [74]. The weak signal appeared between 650 and 850 nm could be ascribed to the 2 E g → 2 T 2g spin-allowed transitions of Cu 2+ in the distorted octahedral symmetry [75].…”

“…The main features identified from the absorption spectrum of the hydrogen reduced 5%Cu/ZnO (curve a of Fig. 6) are: (i) a broad absorption signal between 200 nm and 400 nm with a sharp absorption edge at about 370 nm, corresponding to crystalline ZnO; (ii) a broad hump spreading through 400-510 nm associated to the absorption by Cu 1+ ; and (iii) a broad hump between 550 nm and 650 nm corresponding to the absorption due to metallic Cu [74].…”

“…27 Such SP mediated emission has recently been demonstrated in ZnO nanostructures coated with various metals (Al, Ni, Ti, Zn and Cu) and substantial enhancement of the NBE emission was observed. [28][29][30][31][32] Hence, extending plasmonic properties to non-noble metals, most specically, transition metals would denitely open up the range of applications in the eld of optoelectronics. Interestingly, it should also be possible to realize SP-exciton coupling in Cr capped ZnO nanostructures, as transition metals support SP modes at their surfaces.…”
