Nanotechnology application to local anaesthesia (LA)

Abstract: Several advancements have been made on the exact release of local anaesthetics formulation and its efficiency at inducing motor and sensory block for an extended time has been harnessed in clinical practice. The use of sustained release formulations delivers analgesia for a lengthier period of time with one administration, thereby reducing complications that usually arise with administration of conventional analgesia. In addition, controlled release of an anaesthetic drug is said to prevent overdosing, reduced… Show more

“…Here, we summarize several state-of-the art formulations of nano-structured extended-release LAs. The most commonly used morphology is nanoparticle, while nano-structured gel, niosome, film, and rod are accessible as well [8,10,11]. Here, synthesis techniques, release profiles, analgesic effects, and safety quality are provided and compared to help future design and development.…”

“…effects as a method in pain management have been elucidated [64]. In another clinical and preclinical review that focused on the use of nanotechnology for chronic and acute pain management, and surveying both diagnostic and therapeutic uses [65]. Nanomedicine should be developed further by medical practitioners to improve patients healthcare who are constantly living with pain [66].…”

“…Furthermore Bramlett and co-worker [21] also conducted a phase 2, clinical trial study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness, tolerability and pharmacokinetics of liposomal loaded with bupivacaine compared with plain bupivacaine HCL in total knee arthroplasty patient [22]. A total of 134 patients were used for this study and they were administered with 133 mg of DepoFoam or 150 mg of Bupivacaine HCL.…”
