“…This view also fits well with clinical experience, which reveals individuals with varying combinations of grandiosity-—versus vulnerability—-based problems (Ronningstam, 2005; Russ et al, 2008). As a result, it is important for researchers to assess the entire spectrum of narcissism features when identifying correlates and consequences of narcissism (see Siedor, Maples-Keller, Miller, & Campbell, 2016, for a similar argument).…”

“…Although it currently is unclear which exact traits are measured by the HPS, research based on Schalet et al’s (2011) structural findings suggests that there is considerable value in examining specific content subscales derived from its items. For example, the Social Vitality subscale derived from Schalet et al’s (2011) three-factor structure has been shown to associate strongly positively with extraversion and some narcissistic traits (e.g., leadership/authority, exhibitionism), and displays positive relations with externalizing psychopathology (e.g., risk-taking, callousness, manipulativeness) more generally (Siedor, Maples-Keller, Miller, & Campbell, 2016; Stanton et al, 2016). Moreover, Stanton et al (2016) found that Social Vitality actually associated negatively with indicators of mania in some instances, whereas Excitement showed specificity in predicting hypomania/mania.…”

“…Indeed, especially this latter index ( r ICC ) has been frequently applied in prior research to test the equivalence of different trait indicators. These tests include comparison of inventories sought to measure the same construct(s) (e.g., Gentile et al, ; Maples et al, ; Maples, Guan, et al, ; Miller, Price, & Campbell, ) or different (albeit related) constructs (e.g., Maples, Miller, Hoffman, & Johnson, ; Miller, Hyatt, Maples‐Keller, Carter, & Lynam, ; Miller, Lynam, et al, ; Siedor, Maples‐Keller, Miller, & Campbell, ), as well as of different questionnaire formats applied to the same inventory (e.g., Miller, Gentile, et al, ). Herein, we build on these ideas and present a more holistic approach to test the equivalence of trait indicators in terms of predictive validity, comparing the entire pattern of relations of the indicators across a variety of criteria using a tailored analytic approach that integrates (descriptive and statistical) comparison of the observed zero‐order correlation matrices, the overall proportion of explained variance, and the unique (incremental) effects in multiple regression analyses across (groups of) indicators.…”
