We study the pion-nucleon sigma term in vacuum and in nuclear matter in the framework of global color model of QCD. With the effective gluon propagator being taken as the δ-function in momentum space of Munczek-Nomirovsky model, we estimate that the sigma term at chiral limit in the vacuum is 9/2 times the current quark mass and it decreases with the nuclear matter density.With the presently obtained in-medium pion-nucleon sigma term, we study the in-medium chiral quark condensate and obtain a reasonable variation behavior against the nuclear matter density.

We consider an effective field theory of NN system in nuclear medium. The shallow bound states, which complicate the effective field theory analysis and lead to the large scattering length in the vacuum case do not exist in matter. We study whether the chiral expansion of the effective potential can be truncated in such situation. The cutoff regularization is used to render the solution of the Bethe-Goldstone equation finite. We show that the next-to-leading order terms in the chiral expansion of the effective NN potential can indeed be interpreted as corrections so that the truncation of the expansion is justified. However, it is pointed out that it is still useful to treat the problem nonperturbatively since it may allow the consideration of the nuclear systems with the density smaller that the normal nuclear matter one. The possible directions of constructing the chiral theory of NN interaction in medium are outlined.Comment: 10 pages, revte

It is argued that Weinberg's approach to the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction problem within effective field theory provides a consistent power counting for renormalized diagrams. Within this scheme the NN potential is organized as an expansion in terms of small quantities like small external momenta and the pion mass (divided by the characteristic large scale of the effective theory). Physical observables to any given order in these small quantities are calculated from the solutions of the Lippmann-Schwinger (or Schrödinger) equation.
