Narrow Intercondylar Notch and Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury in Female Nonathletes with Knee Osteoarthritis Aged 41–65 Years in Plateau Region

Abstract: Background:Few data are available concerning intercondylar notch dimensions in female nonathletes with knee osteoarthritis (OA) in plateau region. The aim of this study was to assess the relation of intercondylar notch morphology to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in female nonathletes with knee OA aged 41–65 years from the Chinese Loess Plateau. Methods:The study was conducted on 330 patients with ACL injury (aged 31–65 years; 159 males, 171 females), 141 patients with OA (aged 31–65 years; 59 males,… Show more

“…5 The cutoff values of 4.3° in men and 4.5° in women for MTS have ORs of 2.94 and 6.18, respectively. 6 Further, an increased LTS was associated with an increased ACL injury risk, with an OR of 1.12. 2 In addition, the lateral middle cartilage slope on MRI scans is a risk factor for an ACL injury, with a reported OR of 1.303.…”

“…In most of the studies, an NW between 10.4 and 22.5 mm, especially ≤17 mm, was associated with a significantly increased risk of ACL injuries. 6,10,25 On the other hand, in some studies, an NWI between 0.16 and 0.26 was associated with an ACL injury. 3,21 Also, a reduced tibial EW and tibial eminence volume (and associated NW-EW ratio) have been associated with an increased risk of ACL injuries.…”

“…The NWIs at the locations of the femoral notch inlet, outlet, and ACL attachment were not effective parameters for predicting ACL injuries in the multivariate analysis. As the NWI is a ratio that reflects the relative stenosis of the femoral notch and has had numeric cut-off values from 0.19–0.27 in different studies [2729], its accuracy might be insufficient. Moreover, we suspected that the relative stenosis of the femoral notch in some specific locations might not indicate ACL impingement.…”

“…The initial changes in osteoarthritis (OA) always occur in the noncalcified part of the articular cartilage (AC), followed by gradual damage to the zone of calcified cartilage (ZCC); however, OA sometimes starts ZCC that could be the subtypes of OA. [ 1 2 ] Therefore, rebuilding the ZCC is an essential strategy in the treatment of OA. The use of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to repair the ZCC in some studies represents a new milestone in the treatment of degenerative OA.…”
