NASA Advanced Explorations Systems: 2018 Advancements in Life Support Systems

Abstract: The NASA Advanced Exploration Systems (AES) Life Support Systems (LSS) project strives to develop reliable, energy-efficient, and low-mass spacecraft systems to provide environmental control and life support systems (ECLSS) critical to enabling long duration human missions beyond low Earth orbit (LEO). Highly reliable, closed-loop life support systems are among the capabilities required for the longer duration human space exploration missions planned in the mid-2020s and beyond. The LSS Project is focused on t… Show more

“…The brine was hazardous and could not be further distilled, leading to loss of water. Therefore, in theory, more water could be recovered if sustainable technologies with lower consumption, milder operation conditions, and no hazardous products, such as advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and biological technologies, could substitute the current chemical pre-treatment and physical distillation treatment on urine wastewater [5,6]. In this study, we focused on biological methods as substitution.…”

“…To get there, we need to transition from Earth-reliant to Earth-independent mission architecture. Agencies like the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and European Space Agency (ESA) have developed exceptional life support systems for Earth-reliant human missio ns into space 1 . Carefully planned medicine, food, and environmental control re-supply shuttles working in concert with on-board environmental control and life support systems maintain a habitable environment for astronauts in the International Space Station (ISS) 2 .…”

“…Research on top-level design and evaluation will also receive further attention. Meyer [ 25 ] summarized the development status and technology development fields of ECLSS in recent years. Owens [ 26 ] comprehensively analyzed the overall impact that different ECLSS architectures have on the quality of the crewed Mars missions and considered the decision-making impact of ECLSS architectures on other mission architectures, such as transportation systems.…”
