Nasal Acinic Cell Carcinoma in a Cat

Abstract: Abstract. This case report describes the clinical, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-related, and pathologic features of a nasal acinic cell carcinoma in a cat. A 16-year-old, castrated male, oriental shorthaired cat, weighing 3.8 kg, was presented with history of sneezing, coughing, and nasal discharge persisting several months. Evaluation by MRI revealed an heterogeneous, space-occupying lesion that filled the left nasal cavity and was diagnosed by histopathologic examination as an acinic cell carcinoma arisi… Show more

“…The diagnosis is supported by the presence of PAS‐positive diastase‐resistant cytoplasmic secretory granules (consisting of glycoprotein‐based enzymes) in the serous acinar cells, which comprised the bulk of the tumor on histopathologic examination . The positive alcian blue and mucicarmine staining confirmed concurrent differentiation toward mucous acinar cells . Serous cells are infrequently recognized in aspirates of mandibular salivary tissue, because the gland consists of mixed acini with serous demilunes closely associated with the more apparent mucous cells .…”

“…Acinic cell carcinoma can be distinguished from adenocarcinoma by the presence of well‐differentiated acinar salivary gland epithelial cells . The diagnosis is supported by the presence of PAS‐positive diastase‐resistant cytoplasmic secretory granules (consisting of glycoprotein‐based enzymes) in the serous acinar cells, which comprised the bulk of the tumor on histopathologic examination . The positive alcian blue and mucicarmine staining confirmed concurrent differentiation toward mucous acinar cells .…”

“…The most commonly encountered type of paranasal tumours in the cat are lymphomas [2] . It is a well known fact that most feline nasal and paranasal tumours are malignant [1] .…”
