Nasal Carriage of Staphylococcus Aureus in a Population of Healthy Nigerian Students

Abstract: SUMMARY. The nasal carrier-rate of Staphylococcus aureus in 548 Nigerians aged 9-32 years and attending various educational establishments was 56.4%. This rate decreased with increasing age. A significantly greater proportion of females (65.0%) than males (46.5%) were carriers, but the excess in females was apparent only in subjects aged >20 years. Mucoid strains of S . aureus, which gave a negative slide-coagulase reaction, were found in 21.5% of carriers aged 10-15 years, but were absent from members of othe… Show more

“…The nasal carrier rate of S.aureus in this present study was 14%. This carriage rate correlates well with the results of Chigbu and Ezeronye [12] and the ranges described by Riewerts et al [19] but lower than the figures obtained in another Nigerian study [6]. This variation may be attributed to the population studied, the sampling and culture techniques.…”

“…This variation may be attributed to the population studied, the sampling and culture techniques. Lamikanra et al [6] observed that carriage rate of individuals from 9-32 years decrease progressively as the age increases. The present investigation has mean age of 24.…”

“…aureus colonises the nasal mucosa of approximately 25-30% of apparently healthy population (Lamikanra, Paul, Akinwole, Paul, 1985;Yamamoto et al, 2010). This provides a reservoir from which it can be introduced when host defenses are breached, and has been reported to increase the risk for subsequent infections (Mahdi et al, 2000;Wertheim et al, 2005).…”
