Nasopharyngeal Branchial Cysts—Diagnosis and Management: A Case Series

Abstract: Nasopharyngeal branchial cysts (NBCs) have been discussed in the literature in only a limited number of publications. Differing from Tornwaldt cysts, NBCs present laterally and arise from the fossa of Rosenmuller and may track superiorly within the bony confines of the Eustachian tube. Initially patients are asymptomatic but may present with aural fullness, unilateral conductive hearing loss, and serous otitis media as the cyst mass grows. Two of our three patients had the lesion incidentally identified at the… Show more

“…Mucus retention cysts are differentiated from Tornwaldt cysts in that they arise superficial to the pharyngobasilar fascia. 9 Although they can be located in the same area, neither Tornwaldt cysts nor mucus retention cysts would be shown to communicate with the spine as in this case. Bronchogenic cysts, although commonly found in the mediastinum, have also been dem-…”

“…However, the specific site in the nasopharynx can provide helpful clues [2].Cysts arising from the nasopharynxmay be midline or lateral based on their natural origin [3]. Differing from Tornwaldt cysts, nasopharyngeal branchialcysts present laterally and arise from the fossa of Rosenmuller and may track superiorly within the bony confines of the Eustachian tube [4].Embryogenic cysts of the pharyngeal bursa and Rathke's pouch are usually located in the midline [2].…”
