In Ethiopia, using pesticides to manage pests in the growing of fruits and vegetables is a standard practice. Various classes of pesticides have been approved to combat pests, but the majority of those in use now are outdated broad-spectrum insecticides with significant residual effects on crops of freshly eaten fruits and vegetables. This review reveals that Ethiopia’s assessment of the residual pesticide level in fruits and vegetables has been lacking. According to the reviewed literature, crops that are often treated with pesticides in many countries have significant residual pesticide levels. However, Ethiopia has not adequately reported on this issue. Furthermore, due to a lack of knowledge regarding the impact of pesticide residues on human health, Ethiopians frequently use pesticides improperly to control pests in fruits and vegetables. The majority of consumers eat their fruits and vegetables unprocessed, without washing or cooking them first. To reduce the risk of pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables for consumer safety and to battle the health effects of toxic chemicals in humans, monitoring pesticide residues and raising awareness about the adverse effects of pesticides on humans are urgently needed. Before they may be registered and sold, pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables as well as in the environment must also undergo proper testing and evaluation. New pesticide generations that have fewer side effects on fruits and vegetables must also be developed. By washing, peeling, canning, or boiling fruits and vegetables before consumption, the detrimental effects of pesticide residues on human health can be minimized.

BACKGROUNDOrganophosphorus pesticides (OPs) were used in large quantities, and pesticide residues have caused different degrees of environmental pollution. Because the current laboratory detection techniques cannot meet the requirements of quickly and accurately monitoring pesticide concentration, there is an urgent need for a portable and accurate method to trace pesticide residues. This paper reports an effective electrochemical sensor composed of ZrO2@PDA electrode material and glassy carbon electrode (GCE).RESULTSThis sensor displayed optimal selectivity for dichloride among various OPs with a low limit of detection (LOD = 1.318 × 10−3 mg L−1). Wherein the accuracy and reliability of this electrochemical sensor were verified through the standard method of gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) (p = 0.977 > 0.05), as well as the stability and anti‐interference capabilities. In addition, the results of recovery experiments have shown that the recovery rate of the electrochemical sensor for dichlorvos ranged from 89.2% to 103.8%, with RSD less than 5%, indicating its practical application in the actual sample detection.CONCLUSIONSFinally, the portable sensing platform for on‐site analysis of dichlorvos concentration in farmland water samples was also demonstrated with excellent results. All the results suggested that the prepared ZrO2@PDA composites could serve as a prospective microchip sensor for the on‐site detection of dichlorvos. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Difenoconazole (DFZ) is a broad-spectrum triazole fungicide that is widely utilized in agriculture. Although DFZ has been demonstrated to induce reproductive toxicity in aquatic species, its toxic effects on the mammalian reproductive system have yet to be fully elucidated. In vivo, male mice were administered 0, 20 or 40 mg/kg/d of DFZ via oral gavage for 35 days. Consequently, DFZ significantly decreased testicular organ coefficient, sperm count and testosterone levels, augmented sperm malformation rates, and elicited histopathological alterations in testes. TUNEL assay showed increased apoptosis in testis. Western blotting results suggested abnormally high expression of the sperm meiosis-associated proteins STRA8 and SCP3. The concentrations of retinoic acid (RA), retinaldehyde (RE), and retinol (ROL) were increased in the testicular tissues of DFZ-treated groups. The mRNA expression level of genes implicated in RA synthesis significantly increased while genes involved in RA catabolism significantly decreased. In vitro, DFZ reduced cell viability and increased RA, RE, and ROL levels in GC-2 cells. Transcriptome analysis revealed a significant enrichment of numerous terms associated with the RA pathway and apoptosis. The qPCR experiment verified the transcriptome results. In conclusion, our results indicate that DFZ exposure can disrupt RA signaling pathway, homeostasis, and induce testicular injury in mice testes.
