Nationwide cohort study on the epidemiology and survival outcomes of thyroid cancer

Abstract: In the past three decades, the thyroid cancer incidence has surged globally. Herein, the Taiwan National Health Insurance database was used to identify thyroid cancer patients and to estimate the prevalence and incidence of thyroid cancer during 1997-2012. The Taiwan Cancer Registry and the National Death Registry databases were crosslinked to obtain information on the histological subtypes and survival rates. Joinpoint regression analysis was used for estimating the average annual percentage changes (APCs) in… Show more

“…This result is consistent with a study by Liu et al, stating that the most common age group affected by bone metastasis from thyroid carcinoma is 40-60 years old. 5 However, a study by Tickoo resulted in slightly different mean age for Follicular Neoplasm (64.4 years old), while Papillary Neoplasm's was 58.4 years old, supporting the result of this study. 7 The incidence patterns of each histologic type of thyroid cancer is different according to demographic and tumor characteristics.…”

“…This finding is different from a study by Liu et al, proving that Papillary Neoplasm was the most commonly found type of thyroid carcinoma, contrary to this finding of mostly follicular neoplasms. 5 A study by Goktas also found Papillary Neoplasm more common than Follicular Neoplasm, supporting Liu's. 6 There are several different types of thyroid cancer, which are classified based on how similar they look to normal thyroid cells under a microscope and by the type of cell from which they develop.…”

“…Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), in particular, is the most frequent histotype with a typically excellent prognosis, accounting for 70% to 90% of well-differentiated thyroid malignancies, and though over diagnosis of small tumors is thought to contribute significantly to the increase in incidence, PTC incidence has significantly increased for every stage and tumor size category [3]. The etiology of TC is multifactorial and the proposed risk factors in the literature include sex, family history of TC, radiation exposure, excess weight, iodine intake, and dietary habits [5]. Although the thyroid is characterized by a low proliferation index, it is particularly susceptible to environmental chemicals that may contribute to the increasing incidence of TC [6].…”

“…Widespread use of ultrasonography and fine-needle aspiration cytology has indeed increased the rate of preoperative diagnosis 4 . Increasingly more experts have begun to acknowledge the actual increase in incidence 3 , 5 with respect to the therapy of PTMC because of its indolent character and better prognosis (disease-specific mortality is <1%) 6 . The 2015 American Thyroid Association (ATA) Management Guidelines state that an active surveillance can be considered an alternative to immediate surgery in certain low-risk patients 7 .…”
