Nationwide Incidence of Acute Angle Closure Glaucoma in Korea from 2011 to 2015

Abstract: BackgroundDespite the significant disease burden, there is a paucity of data addressing the population-based incidence of acute angle closure glaucoma (AACG). Therefore, we estimated the nationwide, population-based standardized incidence rate of AACG in Korea.MethodsWe conducted a nationwide, population-based, retrospective study using the database of National Health Insurance (NHI) system, which includes the entire Korean population (approximately 50 million people) from 2009 to 2015. We identified patients … Show more

“…According to a meta-analysis, the estimated PACG prevalence in Chinese women was higher compared with men (1.9% vs 1.1%; adjusted OR: 1.75, 95% CI, 1.20–2.56; P = 0.004) [ 65 ]. In Korea, women had a 2.56 folds higher incidence rate of acute angle closure glaucoma than men [ 66 ]. Though a study reported female (56.6%) was more at odds of developing glaucomatocyclitic crisisris, most studies have shown a male predilection [ 67 ].…”

“… 14 Nationwide studies in Korea and Scotland reported females comprising 72.6% and 64% of acute angle closure presentations. 15 , 16 A smaller anterior chamber is a risk factor for APAC, and the higher prevalence of this ocular characteristic in females likely contributes to the higher incidence. 17 , 18 Furthermore, female life expectancy is higher than that of males in the United States and worldwide, and the shift towards a female-predominant population in older age groups may be contributory.…”

“…This incidence is higher than that in the general population in Asia, which typically ranges from 6 to 12 per 100,000. (29,30) The increased occurrence can be attributed to shallower ACD and a higher LAF in RAM eyes. This raises concerns regarding access to the angle by gonioscopy technique or earlier laser iridotomy in high-risk patients, as indicated by data from the IOL Master.…”
