Natural attenuation of MTBE and BTEX compounds in a petroleum contaminated shallow coastal aquifer

Abstract: Natural attenuation of MTBE and BTEX compounds in a petroleum contaminated coastal aquifer in the Tel-Aviv area was investigated. Significant decrease in MTBE concentration and complete disappearance of BTEX compounds occur within 100 m groundwater flow. Highly anaerobic conditions were determined in the close vicinity to the spill source. In order to examine the contribution of microbial degradation to the attenuation process at anaerobic conditions, compound-specific carbon isotope ratio analysis was employe… Show more

“…This means the environmental contaminants are undisturbed while natural attenuation works on them. Natural attenuation processes are often categorized as destructive or non-destructive (Gelman and Binstock 2008). Destructive processes destroy the contaminant, while non-destructive processes cause a reduction in contaminant concentrations (Khan et al 2004).…”

“…Chronic contamination of groundwater by anthropogenic pollutants originating from industrial, municipal, and agricultural activities is a growing environmental challenge. For example, the Israeli coastal aquifer is contaminated with a number of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as explosives, volatile solvents, pesticides, and petroleum products. , As aquifers are often considered as a vital water supply reservoir with multiyear storage capacity, the release of POPs into groundwater requires remedial actions.…”

“…On the other hand, increasing the vehicles number, caused more industrial waste production, such as heavy metals. According to their health disorders, it is necessary to manage this hazardous compounds (30). The heavy metals accumulated in earthworms tissues are analyzed in terms of concentration factors, such as the bioconcentration factors (BCFs) and the bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) with the assumption that the organisms have achieved chemical equilibrium with respect to a particular media or route of exposure (8,30).…”
