Natural Cell Patches: Melanin Nanoparticles for MR Imaging‐Guided Antiatherosclerosis Therapy via Attenuating Macrophage Pyroptosis (Adv. Funct. Mater. 13/2023)

Abstract: Natural Cell Patches In article number 2212748, Longjiang Zhang and co‐workers report a multifunctional nanoplatform cRGD‐PEG‐MNP (RpMP). RpMPs act like cell patches to suppress macrophage pyroptosis, thus potently ameliorating the development of atherosclerosis via targeting plaque neovascularization. Chelator‐free Gd3+‐RpMPs exhibit persistent T1‐weighted contrast‐enhanced efficiency and plaque resident on a 9.4 T Micro MR scanner. The presented nanoplatform possesses the potential for molecular theranostic … Show more

“…Polydopamine (PDA) is a major pigment of natural eumelanin with favorable biocompatibility and biodegradability, which is widely used for various biomedical applications. 29 As a kind of polyphenol-containing material, the PDA and its analogues exhibit strong ROS scavenging capacity and are broadly used for antioxidant therapy of various diseases, 30 such as AKI, 31 antiatherosclerosis, 32 ischemic stroke, 33 periodontitis, 34 myocardial infarction, 35 senescence, 36 and osteoarthritis. 37 As the PDA possesses a strong chelating ability toward Fe 3+ , the presence of PDA is hoped to purify the ROS generated by the Fe-based Fenton reaction and endows the as-prepared nanoagents with selfpurification capability.…”
