Natural Food Abundance and SIS Biodiversity of Matshaya Rani Fish Sanctuary

Abstract: An investigation was carried out in the Matshaya Rani (fish queen) Fish sanctuary to evaluate the hydrographic status, natural food and SIS (small indigenous species) abundance in the old Brahmaputra River near the BAU campus. There were three treatment sites-inside sanctuary, upstream and downstream of the sanctuary named as treatments T 1 , T 2 and T 3 , respectively. A number of water quality parameters such as temperature ( ) were recorded and were found within the suitable range for natural food and SIS i… Show more

“…It has been reported some threatened species as Chitala chitala, Notopterus notopterus, Gudusia chapra, Puntius sarana, Ompok pabda, Nandus nandus, etc and some endangered species like Rita rita, Sperata seenghala, Pseudeutropius atherinoides, Mastacembelus armatus, etc reappeared in the catch (DoF 2007). Several researchers (Parvez et al 2017, Hossain et al 2017, Hasan et al 2012) stated the positive impacts of sanctuary on fish and shellfish diversity which support the findings of the present study.…”

“…But due to different environmental and manmade destructive activities, natural fish stocks are declining day by day (Azher et al 2006). A good number of fishes are highly regarded for their taste and nutritive value but these are now critically endangered, endangered and vulnerable (Hasan et al 2012). Water is harmed profusely all over the country by insane interruption of human beings.…”

“…However, after declaration as a sanctuary, 35 (native 30 and 5 exotic species) species were found newly available in the sanctuary area. Retrieval of fisheries species was also reported by Joadder et al (2016) in Kumari Beel sanctuary (16 species) and Hasan et al (2012) in Matshyarani fish sanctuary (32 species). Recovery rate in the present study was the highest for the order Siluriformes (11) followed by Cypriniformes (10), Periciformes (5), Osteoglossiformes (2), Cyprinidontiformes (1) and Channiformes (1) ( Figure 2).…”

“…Taiyebi (2009), reported five major groups of phytoplankton that were Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Euglenophyceae and Rhodophyceae from old Brahmaputra river beside Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh campus where the most dominant group was Chlorophyceae and Rotifera. Hasan (2008) also found five major groups of phytoplankton which was Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Euglenophyceae and Rhodophyceae from the same river Brahmaputra. Therefore it could be argued that the cage installed ponds were nutrient rich and highly productive and cage culture did not affect pond productivity.…”
