Natural history collections as sources of long-term datasets

Abstract: In the otherwise excellent special issue of Trends in Ecology and Evolution on long-term ecological research (TREE 25(10), 2010), none of the contributors mentioned the importance of natural history collections (NHCs) as sources of data that can strongly complement past and ongoing survey data. Whereas very few field surveys have operated for more than a few decades, NHCs, conserved in museums and other institutions, comprise samples of the Earth's biota typically extending back well into the nineteenth centur… Show more

“…In addition, natural history collections were evidenced as sources of data that can complement past surveys. They also comprise samples that span the period of accelerated anthropogenic habitat destruction and climate warming, reflecting baseline conditions (Lister 2011). There could not be a comparison to be made without Natterer's committed bird collections and Pelzeln's (1868) publication, rendering our study a rare opportunity to evaluate how bird species richness differed within the same site almost 200 years apart.…”

“…Figueiredo et al, 2009). Particularly in these areas it may be difficult to obtain baseline knowledge of species, communities and ecosystems with which to monitor how climate, land-use and livelihood changes are affecting biodiversity, and thus to make informed conservation decisions (Lister, 2011). While the possibility exists to obtain data from old field-based studies, re-visit the sites of these studies, and repeat the sampling procedures to compare current and historical biodiversity (e.g.…”

“…Increasingly, NHCs have proven useful in providing evidence of climate change, pollution, species decline, habitat loss, and threats to agriculture and public health (e.g. : Colla et al 2012, Graham et al 2004, Lavoie 2013, Lister 2011, Page et al 2015, Pyke and Ehrlich 2010, Suarez and Tsutsui 2004, Winker 2004.…”
