Natural history of disseminated intravascular coagulation diagnosed based on the newly established diagnostic criteria for critically ill patients: Results of a multicenter, prospective survey*

“…Based on the results of a subgroup analysis of our previous prospective study, we anticipated that the mortality rate of the present study would be 22 to 44% in the antithrombin arm and the control arm, respectively [24,30]. Indeed, the probability of death based on the APACHE II score of the two groups (Table 3) was approximately 30 to 40% [21].…”

“…Organ dysfunction was assessed according to the sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score [22]. A DIC diagnosis was made based on the JAAM DIC diagnostic criteria [23,24]. Overt DIC scores calculated based on the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) scoring system were also used [25].…”

“…The acute‐phase criteria was formulated for the purpose of facilitating early‐stage DIC diagnoses, of the 3 diagnostic criteria, DIC should be diagnosed for the most widespread coagulopathies 382, 394. This criterion has become the most widely‐used diagnostic criterion for sepsis‐associated DIC in Japan because of the simplicity of its associated diagnostic procedures.…”
