Natural Images from the Birthplace of the Human Eye

Abstract: Here we introduce a database of calibrated natural images publicly available through an easy-to-use web interface. Using a Nikon D70 digital SLR camera, we acquired about six-megapixel images of Okavango Delta of Botswana, a tropical savanna habitat similar to where the human eye is thought to have evolved. Some sequences of images were captured unsystematically while following a baboon troop, while others were designed to vary a single parameter such as aperture, object distance, time of day or position on t… Show more

“…Static natural jittered scenes consisted of images drawn from a natural image database 32 and drifted in two dimensions with the approximate statistics of fixational eye movements 17 . The image also changed to a different location every one second, representing a saccade-like transition.…”

“…• every 4-6 min [Johnsen et al, 2006], and a wide range of changes in the intensity and color of light can occur over a span of 2-4 hr [e.g., Tkačik et al, 2011]. For example, the spectral composition of twilight differs from day and night, being enriched in short wavelengths and distinctly purplish in Madagascar [Pariente, 1980] and at northern latitudes [Endler, 1993;Lee & Hernández-Andrés, 2003;Johnsen et al, 2006].…”

“…We first downloaded 2897 different images without human faces from [4,9,5], National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Photo Library 2 and European Southern Observatory 3 . They were divided into two sets containing 2451 and 446 images respectively for training and validation.…”
