Natural Involution of Acute Retinopathy of Prematurity Not Requiring Treatment: Factors Associated With the Time Course of Involution

Abstract: The natural involution of acute ROP not requiring treatment correlated better with severity than with ROP location. Active stage 3 disease, CPAP, and anemia were predictive risk factors for delayed involution of ROP.

“…However, Banerjee et al found that low haemoglobin levels at birth were associated with increased morbidities, including ROP (15). In a retrospective case series of 82 eyes who had milder ROP not warranting treatment, anaemia was found to be one of the predictive risk factor for delayed involution of ROP (25) and timely blood transfusions have been suggested as a way of initiating the regression of ROP (14).…”

“…2 To date, ROP has been a leading cause of childhood blindness, particularly in the middle-income developing countries in Asia. 3 Compared to developed countries, bigger and more mature infants in China also develop severe ROP, so early diagnosis and timely treatment are important for preventing the progression of ROP. 4,5 Nevertheless, there are limited studies among preterm infants in China.…”

“…A favorable ROP outcome was assigned if the retinal vessels progressed to full vascularization in both eyes without meeting criteria for severe ROP, or if on two consecutive examinations the retinal vessels were in zone III(16). Examinations were continued, if necessary, up to 55 weeks PMA (3 months after term due date)(19,20). Infants who did not meet either criterion had all available examinations reviewed by an adjudication committee.…”
