Natural Latex Films as Carrier for Casearia sylvestris Swartz Extract Associated with Ciprofloxacin

Abstract: In order to create a new sustained drug delivery system applied for tissue regeneration, this study beget a natural rubber latex (NRL) film with Casearia sylvestris extract and ciprofloxacin. Manipulated from the biomaterial latex obtained by the rubber tree Hevea brasiliensis, the NRL film has shown to be a great angiogenic compound and also has shown a great potential in being a possible carrier for sustained drug release. In order to increase the therapeutic spectrum of the film two substances was added to … Show more

“…The mass loss in the temperature range 300-450°C (the most intense peak shown in Fig. 3b) is due to the structural decomposition of NR chains and corresponds to approximately 88, 74, 56, and 41% for the NR, 90/10, 70/30, and 50/50 samples, respectively [38,39]. For the NR, the maximum rate of mass loss occurs at 365°C, as exhibited by the most intense peak in Fig.…”

“…Extract of Casearia sylvestris Sw. and ciprofloxacin was incorporated into NR films preserving the properties of the substances since no chemical interaction between materials was observed [40] . The release rate of the extract was higher (~94%) than that of ciprofloxacin (~54%), both substances being adhered to the surface of porous NR films.…”

“…Latex is extracted from the rubber tree Hevea brasiliensis , and it is both a healing substance and defense mechanism for this organism [ 17 ]. Numerous research which used natural latex as an implant on different tissues have presented satisfactory results, which motivate the development of new works in the area [ 13 , 17 20 ]. Regarding this scope, personalized insoles made with natural latex have been used as an important tool for the reduction of plantar pressure in the treatment of patients with a diabetic foot [ 12 , 17 ].…”

“…The research of Duff A. C. indicates that one in four of young diabetics (age 11-24) has increased plantar pressure and/or plantar blister (lump, tissue thickening—lat. plantar callus) [ 13 , 20 , 21 ]. The impacted areas are high-risk areas for development of some variety of foot conditions in adulthood.…”
