Natural Leishmania infantum infection in Migonemyia migonei (França, 1920) (Diptera:Psychodidae:Phlebotominae) the putative vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Pernambuco State, Brazil

Abstract: A study of the natural infection of phlebotomine sand flies by Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum was conducted in an area of visceral leishmaniasis in São Vicente Férrer, located in the northern part of the Atlantic rain forest region in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil. In a previous study, Migonemyia migonei have been found predominantly in peridomiciles and houses in this endemic area. The analysis of M. migonei, collected by CDC light trap, by multiplex PCR assay coupled to non-isotopic hybridization showed … Show more

“…An enzootic cycle of VL and accidental transmission to humans was suggested for this sand fly vector . There are similar reports from San Vicente Ferrer in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil, and the natural infection of this species by L. (L.) infantum chagasi has been documented (CARVALHO et al, 2007(CARVALHO et al, , 2010.…”

“…A similar pattern has been demonstrated in San Vicente Férrer, State of Pernambuco, in northeastern Brazil. In this study, the natural infection of L. migonei with L. (L.) infantum chagasi was documented, highlighting the potential role of this vector for parasite transmission in these areas (CARVALHO et al, 2010). The objective of this study was to gain insight into the transmission of L. infantum in Fortaleza by studying the ecology of L. longipalpis and L. migonei through the evaluation of entomological indicators of VL and discussing whether these sympatric species may share the role as vectors for L. infantum in urban areas.…”

“…Other phlebotomine species as Lu. cruzi has been incriminated as vector of L. infantum in some regions of Mato Grosso do Sul state (Santos et al 1998, Pita--Pereira et al 2008 and Migonemyia migonei in Pernambuco state (Carvalho et al 2010). In Santa Catarina Island, a phlebotomine survey conducted in 2010 at the CVL focus area identified four sandfly species (Brumptomyia sp., Lu.…”

“…Aguiar et al 21 highlighted the high anthropophily of L. migonei, its adaptability to modified environments, and its low occurrence in wild environments, which also was observed in the study area. Moreover, the vector role of L. migonei has been suggested in areas of autochthonous cases of VL where L. longipalpis, the classic vector of Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum, is not found 6,22,23 . Lutzomyia complexa, the predominant species in forest remnants, which presents considerable distribution in Pernambuco, also has been reported in Recife, Paudalho (northern rainforest area) and Amaraji (southern rainforest area) 24 .…”
