Natural Physical Disturbances and Communities of Marine Soft Bottoms

Abstract: Natural physical d~s t u r b a n c e s have been s h o w n to b e rmportant ~n Ihe organizdtion of a variety of terrestrial a n d marine communitics. Some workers h a v e suggested that disturbance may play a similar role in soft-bottom ~n f a u n a communities. A consequence of such a view is t h e expectation that some species will become unusually abuntlant early in t h e recolon~zation of a disturbed patch, reflecting thtbir d e p e n d e n c e on disturhsd localities for their persistence in t h e local c… Show more

As concluded by Thistle (1981) gether with carnivores/burrowing detritivores (N. dihydrobiid snails are highly mobile, continuously moving versicolor) increase in relative numbers. “…Every species in the food-web will exhibit a broad niche. time in control and under algae adapted to grow and reproduce in a single patch (Thistle 1981). This strategy is probable for the oligochaete species in this study.…”

“…Disturbance may prevent a community from reaching competitive equilibrium (Connell 1978), provide extra resources (Thistle 1981) and, at intermediate intensities, increase diversity (Huston 1979). Studies of disturbance events in marine communities have concentrated on rocky shore and fine sediment habitats; little information is available on the role of disturbance in structuring the communities of mobile gravel-sand sediments.…”
