Natural plant revegetation on reclaimed coal mine landscapes in Agacli-Istanbul

Abstract: In this study, natural vegetation development was compared on one abandoned open coal mine spoil and three reclaimed coal mine areas with umbrella pine-Pinus pinea L., maritime pine-Pinus pinaster Ait. and leguminous black locust-Robinia pseudoacacia L. in Agacli-Istanbul. Soil data of these sample areas were determined in previous studies. These properties demonstrate physically and nutritionally poor conditions and some rehabilitative effects after tree species were introduced. The plant species composition … Show more

“…Legumes that usually serve as a cover crop include Centrosoma, Pueraria, Calopogonium, and Crotalaria, while those serving as fillers and then developing into the main stands are sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria), Acacia mangium, A. auriculiformis, turi (Sesbania grandiflora), johar (Cassia siamea), trembesi (Samanea saman), kaliandra (Calliandra callothyrsus), malapari (Pongamia pinnata), and lamtoro (Leucaena glauca). Vegetation protects the soil effectively from winds that may carry toxic particles, runoff, and soil erosion (Makineci et al 2011). In general, legume is intentionally planted to improve soil fertility (Sheoran et al 2010;Smith et al 2016;Stagnari et al 2017).…”

“…The rehabilitation of mine spoils challenges should resemble its natural previous landforms as much as possible. However, mine spoils possess very harsh conditions for plant establishment and growth due to low organic matters, heavy metal contents and other unfavorable physicochemical characteristics (Makineci et al 2011;Tripathi et al 2012).…”

“…Succession is a dynamic and continuous process, which occurs gradually over time. Plant succession following the exogenous disturbances associated with surface mining is a subject of both ecological and practical interests (Makineci et al 2011). During plant establishment at different stages of succession, recolonization of diverse plant species plays a major role in the process of soil formation, which in turn the improved soil condition will promote the plant succession.…”
