Natural products for managing landscape and garden pests in Florida

Abstract: Many people are seeking available and effective options that are safer for people and the environment than some conventional synthetic pesticides. There is also rising interest in organic gardening, which relies on many natural pesticides. Natural products can be used in isolation or combination with conventional pesticide programs as valuable rotation options, delaying or preventing onset of insect and disease resistance caused by repeatedly using the same chemical controls. This publication describes natural… Show more

“…For example, some herbivorous insects consume and sequester plant toxins within their tissues to provide protection from predators, while plants have evolved defenses against various insect feeding strategies, which are counterbalanced by the ability of insects to detoxify plant chemicals or to react specifically to plant compounds (Gordon-Weeks & Pickett, 2009). In addition, natural products such as plant and petroleum oils can be used to control insects by killing them upon contact or causing them to stop feeding (Borden et al, 2022). Therefore, the study of natural products in insect-plant interactions is important for understanding the ecological and chemical mechanisms underlying these interactions.…”

This nding can be explained considering that botanical insecticides have different chemical compositions and modes of action, that is, some compounds can act immediately on insects while others may take longer(Borden et al 2018). Extracts and essential oils of C. variegatum have numerous properties of interest, among which antimicrobial, anti-in ammatory, healing, and insecticide stand out (Njoya et al 2021), with some reports con rming the insecticidal potential for Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) (Lawal et al 2018) and for mosquitoes of the genus Culex (Diptera: Culicidae) (Awosolu et al 2018).…”
