Natural Toxins for Use in Pest Management

Abstract: Natural toxins are a source of new chemical classes of pesticides, as well as environmentally and toxicologically safer molecules than many of the currently used pesticides. Furthermore, they often have molecular target sites that are not exploited by currently marketed pesticides. There are highly successful products based on natural compounds in the major pesticide classes. These include the herbicide glufosinate (synthetic phosphinothricin), the spinosad insecticides, and the strobilurin fungicides. These a… Show more

“…Niclosamide has become the mainstay of GAS control and eradication programs [8]. Synthetic molluscicides are known for their knock-down effect; however, their negative impact on the environment and the high costs of application have stimulated interest in the search for plant-derived molluscicides which are target specific, and environmentally and toxicologically safe [9][10][11]. Botanical pesticides have long been explored as effective alternatives to synthetic chemical counterparts due to their low toxicity to non-target organisms, their biodegradability, and due to them being less expensive in their crude form, in addition to the prevention of development of resistance against phytochemical mixtures [12][13][14][15].…”

“…Therefore, new and alternative mosquito control agents are emerging. Plant-derived products including essential oils (EOs) may offer an alternative and effective means of managing populations of mosquitoes [8][9][10][11]. As a part of our ongoing investigation of Turkish medicinal and aromatic plants, we report on the chemical composition of the aerial parts of S. gummiferum subsp.…”

“…The primary method of mosquito control relies on the use of biological and/or synthetic insecticides [6]. Due to long term repeated chemical use, mosquito species have acquired resistance to commonly used insecticides, and especially against commercial pyrethroids [8][9][10][11]. Therefore, new and alternative mosquito control agents are emerging.…”
