Naturalized Dolichogenidea gelechiidivoris complement the resident parasitoid complex of Tuta absoluta in North‐eastern Spain

Abstract: Our work reports on the establishment of the neotropical parasitoid Dolichogenidea gelechiidivoris Marsh (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) for the first time in Europe. This larval parasitoid has been recorded in samples collected in commercial tomato crops in Catalonia (North-eastern Spain) from 2016 to the present. Dolichogenidea gelechiidivoris is considered to be a new biocontrol agent among the resident parasitoid complex of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae).

“…Besides N. tutae, other parasitoids are known to attack T. absoluta, including Dolichogenidae gelichiidivoris Marsh (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), which is newly present in the invaded areas and originates from the same area as T. absoluta (Denis et al, 2022;Krache et al, 2021;Salas Gervassio et al, 2019). Traditional approaches such as life table assessment remain fundamental for model developments.…”

“…While several companies have attempted to mass‐produce this species, the utilization of N. tutae is now restricted to conservation biological control due to an unfavorable cost–benefit balance 9 . More recently, Dolichogenidea gelechiidivoris (Marsh) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), which originates from the Neotropics, has established in Spain and Algeria 30,31 . In South America, it is considered an essential agent against T. absoluta , 32 and in 2017 it was imported to Kenya from Peru to contribute to the control of T. absoluta in Africa 33 .…”
