Naturalness: A Snowmass White Paper

Abstract: We assess the state of naturalness in high-energy physics and summarize recent approaches to the three major naturalness problems: the cosmological constant problem, the electroweak hierarchy problem, and the strong CP problem.

“…For some combinations of observables, the average over 13 models of our sample is listed in eq. (4.16) 12 . The quoted error only illustrates the spread of the actual predictions for each combination and has no statistical meaning.…”

“…If we believe that a field theory description should remain valid at energy scales much larger than the electroweak scale, perhaps even up to the Planck scale M P , we have to explain the appearance of a tiny dimensionless parameter given by the Higgs VEV evaluated in units of M P . The Higgs quadratic coupling appears to be tuned to set the SM near the phase transition [8][9][10][11][12]. Why is the system near criticality?…”

“…In the post-Higgs era, alleviation of the UV sensitivity has become a much more perplexing problem [4][5][6][7] as because experiments at the LHC have detected no new particles at the weak scale [8,9]. In spite of various interesting mechanisms proposed so far [10], alleviation of the UV sensitivity is a thorny open problem and calls for a resolution.…”

“…A generic model should include all terms respecting symmetries, and the coefficient of each term should take a generic value. This type of genericity is related to naturalness [162,163,164,165,166,167,168,169,170], meaning that there is no finetuning in parameters. It is also related to hierarchy problems [171,172,173,174], where a fine-tuning of cancellation between two large parameters gives a small parameter.…”
