“…Nature‐based solutions (NBSs) are the latest in a number of terms that are beginning to influence policy debates on urban regeneration (Marton‐Lefèvre ; Kabisch et al, ), responses to climate change (Cohen‐Shacham, Walters, Janzen, & Maginnis, ; European Environment Agency, ), and sustainable development (Maes & Jacobs, ) as well as nature conservation (Eggermont et al, ; International Union for Conservation of Nature [IUCN], ). As with many new terms, it lacks a clear definition (Potschin et al, ), but its presence within the European Commission's (EC) Horizon 2020 Societal Challenge 5 ‘Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials’ programme (EC, ) and as a key programme for a major conservation non‐governmental organization (NGO; IUCN, ) means that it is a term that will be receiving significant attention for the next few years.…”

“…It is essential to understand that ecosystems #climate change adaptation and mitigation are also affected by climate change, which undermines the underlying ecological processes and translates into their reduced ability to provide us with services. Nature-based solutions can also mitigate other environmental problems such as water, energy and food shortages, caused by excessive use and global environmental changes [Marton-Lefèvre, 2012]. More nature in the city translates into less stormwater runoff and better circulation of water, which reduces the need for plant irrigation and for cooling purposes.…”
