Nature-Inspired Whale Optimization Algorithm for Optimal Coordination of Directional Overcurrent Relays in Power Systems

Abstract: In power systems protection, the optimal coordination of directional overcurrent relays (DOCRs) is of paramount importance. The coordination of DOCRs in a multi-loop power system is formulated as an optimization problem. The main objective of this paper is to develop the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) for the optimal coordination of DOCRs and minimize the sum of the operating times of all primary relays. The WOA is inspired by the bubble-net hunting strategy of humpback whales which leads toward global min… Show more

“…CTI r is a coordination time interval that is determined according to the specified time delays of both OCRs and the operating times of the switch gears. The pickup-current settings and the time-dial settings of all the OCRs can be determined in different ways [4]- [17]. The classic approach is formulated as a minimization of an objective function that is given as a sum of the operating times of all the primary and back-up OCRs, i.e.,…”

“…The selectivity of overcurrent relays (OCRs) is achieved by the timing coordination of their operation. This can be performed using different optimization approaches [4]- [17]. In [4] an interval linear programming problem was formulated, considering changes in the network topologies.…”

“…Recently, scholars and researchers have used different types of optimization methodologies are not only limited to OCR coordination problem but also have signi cant application in di erent elds [11][12][13]. In [14], whale optimization algorithms were introduced to relay coordination problem. In [15], a re y algorithm (FA) was used to analyse directional overcurrent relay (DOCR).…”

“…However, and unlike the PSO, it does not pay much attention to the cooperative behavior of all groups. Many other algorithms have also been incorporated in solving the DOC relays coordination problem, such as the Gravitational Search Algorithm [29], Biogeography-based Energies 2019, 12, 4115 3 of 16 optimization [8], Electromagnetic Field Optimization [30], Firefly algorithm [31] and the Whale Optimization Algorithm [32].…”
