Navier–Stokes modeling of a Gaede pump stage in the viscous and transitional flow regimes using slip-flow boundary conditions

Abstract: A three-dimensional model for a Gaede pump, based on the Navier-Stokes equations with no-slip boundary conditions, was introduced by the authors in a previous work. A commercial computational fluid dynamics code was used to obtain the solution in an outlet pressure range corresponding to the viscous laminar regime and incipient transition to molecular flow and the validation against the experimental data showed a good level of accuracy in terms of compression ratio. However, the mechanical power dissipation pr… Show more

“…(This is one order smaller than the default convergence criteria of the FLUENT TM code.) The capability of foregoing set of schemes to simulate the slip flow regimes has been examined as reported by some researchers (Giors, Subba, & Zanino, 2005;Jain & Lin, 2006;Ogedengbe, Naterer, & Rosen, 2006;Li, He, Tang, & Tao, 2007). The implementation of slip boundary condition in FLUENT TM was performed with the User Defined Functions (UDF) (2001) (UDF Manual of FLUENT TM v6.0.21).…”

“…Finally, the comparison of compression ratios shows a corresponding increase in the pumps having higher R a . We suppose that the increase in the maximum compression ratio of the TMDP estimated for the hydrogen is related to a variation in the viscous slipflow conditions near the rotating disk [12]. However, it has to be noted that the theoretical modeling of the physical phenomena is beyond the purpose of this article and it will require further investigation.…”
