Navigation using indocyanine green fluorescence imaging for hepatoblastoma pulmonary metastases surgery

Abstract: To achieve precise and sensitive detection of chemotherapy-resistant hepatoblastoma pulmonary metastases, we performed surgery using indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging navigation. Lung metastasectomies were performed in 10 patients aged from 1 to 11 years. ICG (0.5 mg/kg) was injected intravenously 24 h before the operation. After a thoracotomy had been performed, a 760-nm infrared ray was applied to the lung using a generator and the 830-nm evoked fluorescence was collected and visualized on a real-… Show more

“…Patients 5 and 9, who underwent total resection of solitary pulmonary metastasis before PBSCT, were alive, with no evidence of recurrence, at the time of writing. ICG fluorescence imaging navigation was used to achieve complete removal of pulmonary metastases for patient 9, according to a previous report . Patient 6, who underwent autologous PBSCT with no detectable tumor, despite sustained elevation of serum AFP level, eventually DOD, which was subsequently detected in the omentum.…”

“…The addition of indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence has helped address this issue. Lesions as small as 0.062mm can be detected using ICG [28] (Figure 4). In addition to lung lesions, primary and recurrent tumor in the liver have also been accurately detected using ICG [29].…”

“…It is contraindicated in those allergic to iodinated contrasts or with thyroid disorders. 9,[11][12][13][14] The use of fluorescence in surgery is emerging, but experience in splenic pathology is very limited. Kawasaki et al 15 used ICG during distal pancreatectomies with splenic preservation.…”
