Near Full-Length Genome Characterization of a New CRF01_AE/CRF08_BC Recombinant Transmitted Between a Heterosexual Couple in Guangxi, China

Abstract: Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) subtype CRF01_AE is transmitted mainly by sexual activity in Guangxi, southwestern China. Other subtypes, including CRF07_BC, CRF08_BC, and subtype B, are also prevalent in this region. Cocirculation of multiple subtypes, as well as a high rate of drug use, creates favorable conditions for the emergence of recombinant viruses in Guangxi. In the present study, we identified a new HIV-1 unique recombinant form (CRF01_AE /08BC) transmitted from the infected index patien… Show more

“…Early HIV transmission among drug users in China originally began along heroin trafficking routes from Southeast Asia from Myanmar and Laos through northern Vietnam to China’s Guangxi Province [411]. This transmission pathway as well newly recombinant HIV strains demonstrating intermixing between populations using intravenous drugs and engaging in high risk heterosexual sex have since been confirmed using molecular subtyping [1113]. …”

“…Therefore, we believed we might have discovered a new CRF of HIV-1 in Guangxi province, and we therefore checked the circulating status of BH048. Literature screening revealed that HIV-1 strain GXDY1299 13 and strain 2261 10 share an extremely similar recombination pattern with BH048, yet GXDY1299 and 2261 are transmitted through sexual contact, not injection drug use. Only 11 different nucleotides were detected between BH048 and 2261 in overlapping fragments 1850-5096.…”

“…Recently, new HIV-1 recombination patterns have been reported in China 10,13 ; most of them, however, have been determined to be unique recombinant forms (URFs) that may not actually circulate. URFs are more easily detected among IDUs because of these individuals' high-risk activities, such as sharing needles.…”

“…We identified three URFs (C /CRF01_AE, 07_BC /CRF01_AE, and 08_BC /CRF01_AE/B) among 2 heterosexually infected individuals and 1 IDU. In Guangxi, several types of URFs have been reported, such as the CRF01_AE/CRF08_BC recombinant form among IDUs [53], the CRF01_AE/CRF07_BC recombinant form in MSM [54], and the CRF01_AE/CRF08_BC recombinant form in heterosexual individuals [55]. Since CRF08_BC, CRF01_AE, and CRF07_BC have been the main strains prevalent in Lingshan County, it is no surprise to identify CRF07_BC /CRF01_AE and CRF08_BC /CRF01_AE recombinant patterns in local patients.…”
