NEAR-ULTRAVIOLET SPECTROSCOPY OF STAR-FORMING GALAXIES FROM eBOSS: SIGNATURES OF UBIQUITOUS GALACTIC-SCALE OUTFLOWS

Abstract: We present rest-frame near-ultraviolet (NUV) spectroscopy of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at 0.6 < z < 1.2 from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) in SDSS-IV. One of the eBOSS programs is to obtain 2″ (about 15 kpc) fiber spectra of about 200,000 emission-line galaxies (ELGs) at redshift z  0.6. We use the data from the pilot observations of this program, including 8620 spectra of SFGs at 0.6 < z < 1.2. The median composite spectra of these SFGs at 2200 Å < λ < 4000 Å feature asymmet… Show more

“…Herethe Fe IIl2587 optical depth is higher than that of the Fe IIl2600 transition, again opposite from the expected oscillator strengths, which are 0.07 and 0.24, respectively (Erb et al 2012). The wind scattering emission models of Prochaska et al (2011) and Scarlata & Panagia (2015) naturally account for these two apparent anomalies, but they also predict prominent fluorescent emission Fe * ll2612, 2626 and Mg II emission profiles, as seen in stacked spectra (Erb et al 2012;Tang et al 2014;Zhu et al 2016) and in the individual cases of Rubin et al (2011) and Martin et al (2013).…”

“…With numerous largescale galaxy surveys expected in the coming years (e.g. Zhu et al, 2015), combining intrinsic absorption-line observations with absorption spectroscopy along transverse sightlines (e.g. Rubin et al, 2010;Kacprzak et al, 2014) will be feasible for a statistically significant sample of massive starburst galaxies.…”
