Nebivolol Attenuates Neutrophil Lymphocyte Ratio: A Marker of Subclinical Inflammation in Hypertensive Patients

Abstract: Background High value of neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a strong independent predictor and biomarker of ongoing vascular inflammation in various cardiovascular disorders. Objective The main focus of the study is to investigate the effect of nebivolol on NLR in mild to moderate hypertensive patients in comparison with metoprolol. In addition, BMI, blood pressure, TLC count, blood sugar, and lipid profile were also assayed before and after treatment. Materials and Methods In this 12-week prospective double… Show more

“…The numbers of inflammatory cells in vessel walls are higher in hypertensive patients. As reflected in various guidelines, inflammatory biomarker levels usefully predict cardiovascular risks (18). A meta-analysis found that a higher NLR was associated with poorer functional outcomes and a higher risk of acute ischemic stroke (19).…”

“…A meta-analysis found that a higher NLR was associated with poorer functional outcomes and a higher risk of acute ischemic stroke (19). An increased NLR was strongly and independently associated with HT severity in patients with untreated essential HT and was reported as prognostically significant regarding HT-associated complications such as heart failure and diseases of the CA, cerebral artery, and peripheral arteries (18).…”

“…By contrast, the GEMINI trial showed that the use of carvedilol did not lead to substantial weight gain [ 111 ] and in fact was associated with beneficial effects such as improved insulin resistance [ 112 ], lipid profile [ 113 ] and a large reduction in microalbuminuria [ 114 ]. Moreover, the highly cardioselective, third-generation β blocker nevibolol demonstrated significant reduction in inflammation, improvement in lipid profile and blood glucose compared to conventional beta blockers [ 115 ].…”

“…Furthermore, the elevated neutrophillymphocyte ratio (NLR) is accepted as an inflammation biomarker for some vascular disease such as coronary heart disease, hypertension. Nebivolol has a strong impact on reducing NLR (30).…”
