Necessity of Internal Monitoring for Nuclear Medicine Staff in a Large Specialized Chinese Hospital

Abstract: This work intends to quantify the risk of internal contaminations in the nuclear medicine staff of one hospital in Henan province, China. For this purpose, the criteria proposed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to determine whether it is necessary to conduct internal individual monitoring was applied to all of the 18 nuclear medicine staff members who handled radionuclides. The activity of different radionuclides used during a whole calendar year and the protection measures adopted were collect… Show more

“…[ 18 ] Unlike other radiation specialties, nuclear medicine applications possess a high risk of contamination, which is a significant source of exposure. [ 19 ] We observed higher DNA damage with internal irradiation compared to external irradiation from Tc-99 m and F-18 sources in the present study. Radiation exposure and absorbed dose from internal contamination can induce greater DNA damage than external contamination.…”

“…Em outros países da América Latina e Caribe [16][17][18] , na América do Norte [19][20][21] , Europa [22][23][24] e Ásia 25,26 , a situação da monitoração interna em medicina nuclear é bastante semelhante à do Brasil. Em alguns países, assim como no Brasil, foram desenvolvidas metodologias de monitoração utilizando os recursos disponíveis nas próprias clínicas.…”

“…The Chinese national standard GBZ 129-2016 Specifications for Individual Monitoring of Occupational Internal Exposure has been published since 2016 [ 5 ]. However, only about 30 institutes could perform internal monitoring now, so 131 I activity on the NM workers was not routinely monitored in China [ 6 ]. Because the Minimum Detectable Activities ( MDA ) varied greatly in different studies, some small-scale measurements [ 7–9 ] conducted in China could not be pooled and analyzed.…”
