Neck circumference as an indicator of elevated blood pressure independent from body composition: implications from the China nation health survey (CNHS)

Abstract: BackgroundThe independent association of neck circumference (NC) on elevated blood pressure is still uncertain in adults of China. The aim of this study is to explore such association and investigate the predictive value of NC on hypertension.MethodsA total of 4279 adults aged 20–80 years participated in the cross-sectional study in 2014. Anthropometric information, NC, body composition indexes such as waist circumference, hip circumference and body fat percentage, and blood pressure were measured. General lin… Show more

“…Our results agree with previous studies that reported a positive association between the NC and BP in children and adults from developing countries [ 7 , 15 , 18 , 24 , 25 , 26 ]. In a systematic review and meta-analysis, the NC was strongly associated with the BP in children [ 15 ].…”

“…Vallianou et al found that NC was positively associated with triglycerides (TGs) but negatively associated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) [ 8 ]. A variety of studies have also demonstrated that NC is independently associated with hypertension [ 12 , 13 ] and hyperuricemia [ 9 ] in individuals with diverse ethnic backgrounds. Interestingly, some studies have demonstrated that compared with traditional anthropometric indexes such as body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), NC was a better indicator of postprandial hyperglycemia, prediabetes, and hyperlipidemia [ 14 , 15 ], implying the extensive application of NC in obesity-related diseases.…”

“…In this study, the waist and neck circumferences in the hypertensive group were significantly higher than those in other patients, and the BMI was also slightly higher than that in other groups. Increases in waist circumference, neck circumference, and BMI were independent risk factors for OSA, and the severity of OSA was also closely related to obesity 22–24 . Additionally, patients with hypertensive HF generally had preserved ejection fraction, 25 which manifests as diastolic dysfunction 23 .…”
