Need for recovery in relation to effort from work and health in four occupations

Abstract: Objective To examine three levels of need for recovery (NFR) after work in relation to effort from work demands, demand compensatory strategies, effort-moderating or-reversing resources, and health including health behaviors. A further purpose was to examine occupational characteristics determining NFR. Methods 5000 engineers, carpenters, nurses, and home care nurses were invited to participate. NFR k-means clusters were calculated from 1289 participants. The effect from three levels of NFR regarding demands, … Show more

“…The nomological validity has been corroborated by operationalization of an extended JD-R model by the instrument with aspects of workability as outcome [11] as well as need for recovery [12] and also in relation to the newly introduced dimensions in the COPSOQ III of Work Engagement, Quality of Work [13] and Cyber Bullying [14]. Studies across different occupations have corroborated the internal consistency reliability and construct validity of the scales [11][12][13][15][16][17][18][19]. The ability to distinguish different groups (organizations with similar missions, work teams or occupational groups) has been demonstrated [20][21][22], as also the relevance of multilevel analyses and for intervention and organizational change studies [23][24][25][26][27][28][29].…”

“…An iterative process including translation-back-translation procedures and cognitive interviewing methods supported the face and content validity, as well as the cross-cultural equivalency of COPSOQ II and COPSOQ III test items [8][9][10]. “…According to the effort-recovery model (Meijman & Mulder, 1998 ), the main driver of NFR is not the demand itself, but rather the effort each individual invests in meeting a specific demand. The depletion process is thus a reaction related to coping with loads of actual work demands, the mental load connected to the use of compensatory strategies, and load remnants from previously unsuccessful attempts to recover (Wentz et al, 2020 ). NFR is accordingly expected to fluctuate across time and situations.…”

“…The recovery from work refers to the process of an individual's functional system activated during work recovering and stabilizing at pre-stress levels, which is an essential factor affecting employees' happiness [3][4][5]. For most employees, weekends are valuable opportunities to replenish their physical and mental resources consumed during workdays.…”

“…In the view of the importance of recovery experience in maintaining physical and mental health, improving individuals' well-being, job performance and organizational effectiveness [4][5][6]37], and the limitations of traditional measurement methods used in previous studies of recovery experience, this study proposed a new approach to predict Weibo user's recovery experience on the weekend by applying Weibo text and behavior data with text mining technology. It is expected to provide a scientific means of measurement for subsequent researches in the field of recovery experience.…”
