A simple and sensitive method for determining flavor compounds in foamable liquid samples was developed using the purge-and-trap method with the addition of glass wool and a functional porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane. Flavor compounds purged from sample solutions were trapped by a needle-type extraction device. The functional PTFE membrane, which retained the aqueous sample while allowing purge gas to pass, was fixed on a glass solid-phase extraction cartridge. Hence, purge gas was continuously introduced into the sample solution from the bottom of the cartridge. To trap the foam, 0.4 g of glass wool was fixed in the sample headspace, and headspace gas was collected using a needle-type extraction device placed on the upper side of the wool. During the purge process, although foam climbed through the cartridge, it was adsorbed on the glass wool. However, the flavor compounds were not adsorbed on the inactive glass wool surface as confirmed in this study. This method does not require the dilution of sample solutions or the adding of antifoam agents to sample solutions. This simple and inexpensive construction enables the sensitive detection of flavor compounds.

Super Absorbent Polymer for Water Removing Process Followed by a Needle-Type Extraction to the Effective Collection of Methanol in Water Samples

Super absorbent polymer (SAP) particles, i.e., sodium polyacrylate, were introduced for purge and trap (PT) extraction of methanol in water samples. The purged methanol was extracted by a needle-type extraction device and determined using a gas chromatograph equipped with a flame ionization detector. A functional porous polytetrafluoroethylene membrane was fixed on a solid-phase extraction glass cartridge to retain the aqueous sample while allowing the purge gas to pass through. A sponge was formed by adding 2 g of SAP particles into 10 mL of water sample. Then, the purge gas was collected from the tip of the cartridge and the purged methanol was extracted on the adsorbent of the extraction needle. The limit of detection of the method was 2.5 ng/mL. The method was applied to the determination of methanol in fruit juice samples. The proposed method showed higher sensitivity than conventional PT methods. Furthermore, bubbles are not produce during PT extraction, showing that the developed method is especially suitable for samples that form bubbles in typical PT extraction processes.

Molecular Shape Selectivity for Polycyclic Aromatic Compoundson a Poly(4-vinylpyridine) Stationary Phase in Liquid Chromatography

Poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) was introduced as a stationary phase in liquid chromatography (LC) and the retention behavior of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) on the P4VP phase has been investigated by comparing with that observed on commercially-available octadecylsilica (ODS) and phenylbutylsilica (PBS) phases. On the P4VP phase, a good linear relationship between the logarithmic retention factor and the molecular size of planar PACs was obtained, however, a unique selectivity for some planar PACs was also observed. The P4VP phase demonstrated a specific retention trend, where planar PACs having "square-like" molecular shape were strongly retained. The above trend clearly suggested a unique selectivity of the P4VP phase for PACs. In addition, compared to the typical ODS and PBS phases, the P4VP phase showed a good molecular shape recognition capability for planar/non-planar PACs with a similar two-dimensional molecular size. The P4VP phase showed a very small retention for various alkylbenzenes, suggesting somewhat limited contribution of the hydrophobicity of the analytes to the retention. In the investigation for the selectivity to structural isomers, the P4VP phase exhibited a unique selectivity for isomers of dichlorobenzene and dibromobenzene when compared to the typical ODS and PBS phases. The trend can be interpreted as a dipole-dipole interaction between pyridyl groups in the P4VP ligands and the analyte.
