Needle Free Monitoring of Blood Glucose Through Reverse Iontophoresis

Abstract: The frequent blood glucose monitoring is highly critical in order to understand the progression of diabetes mellitus and to minimize the probabilities of associated complications. This focuses to the fabrication of a new device for individual blood glucose monitoring. However, this technology turned out to be painful owing to its finger-stick technique, resulting in compromised patient compliance and inconsistent results. A paradigm shift from invasive to non-invasive technique to combat the above-stated limit… Show more

“…The distribution of insulin through microneedles represents one of the most sophisticated and significant applications of this technology. In 2015, the research team led by Zhen Gu introduced the idea and initial model of the "Smart Insulin patch" and subsequently created the Zenomics company to progress its clinical development efforts further [69]. Utilizing microneedles smaller than 1 mm in size can diminish the discomfort associated with injections and enhance the overall quality of life for patients.…”

“…[62] Reverse iontophoresis has mostly received attention in glucose monitoring. [63][64][65] Further applications may involve the detection and monitoring of other biomarkers. The primary factor that should be considered during this technique is maintaining the operating current density, as a strong current may damage the skin.…”
