Needs and Challenges Related to Multilevel Interventions: Physical Activity Examples

Abstract: The theme of this commentary is to discuss the need for, and challenges of, conceptualizing, implementing, and evaluating multilevel health behavior change interventions. Ecological models, recommendations from national and international authoritative groups, and growing evidence all support the need for interventions designed to change multiple levels of influence, including individuals, social environments, organizations, built environments, and policies, to achieve population improvements in public health. … Show more

“…On the other hand, the study might provide a base for developing interventions that address both behavioral context and intrapersonal factors. Such so-called multilevel interventions could be more effective than interventions focusing only on one of these two levels [7,31,77].…”

“…However, in order to foster adolescents' exercise and sport behavior, it is important to more deeply understand the interplay of influencing factors from different levels [7,10,12]. Multilevel studies regarding specific interacting mechanisms are of practical use as they generate knowledge for designing more effective interventions [12,31]. In fact, a basic tenet of the socialecological framework [12] is that factors from multiple levels, such as behavioral context and intrapersonal factors, interact with each other.…”

“…To increase PA and reduce SB needs multilevel interventions. Any interventions involve multiple levels of factors are more effective than single-level interventions [ 52 ]. Medical schools should focus on multilevel interventions to fight the low levels of PA and high levels of sedentariness of medical students as a whole system.…”

“…Health behaviors, including physical activity, are critical for reducing the development of MetS and related diseases [ 31 , 42 ], but most people don't achieve recommended activity levels [ 23 ]. Multiple factors influence physical activity, from individual to communities [ 47 , 49 ]. Intervening on physical activity at multiple levels can reduce morbidity, mortality, and health care costs [ 22 , 31 ].…”
