Negative multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging for prostate cancer: further outcome and consequences

Abstract: Purpose EAU guidelines recommend multiparametric MRI of the prostate (mpMRI) prior to biopsy to increase accuracy and reduce biopsies. Whether biopsy can be avoided in case of negative mpMRI remains unclear. Aim of this study is to evaluate predictors of overall prostate cancer (PCa) in negative mpMRI. Methods A total of 216 patients from 2018 to 2020 with suspicion of PCa and negative mpMRI (PI-RADS ≤ 2) were interviewed by telephone about outcome and fur… Show more

“…(10) In contrast, Haack and colleagues reported 3.7% csPCa risk among patients with PIRADS 1 or 2 who avoided biopsy with 21.5 months follow up, which may be in part attributed to inclusion of prior negative biopsy patients who have a lower csPCa risk. (11,12) Furthermore, the role for potentially omitting biopsy for patients in a screening pathway including advanced serum biomarkers or those with a PIRADS 3 lesion has not been well studied. The majority of patients with PIRADS 3 lesions proceed to MRI fusion biopsy.…”
