The Effect of Mindfulness -Based Stress Reduction Program on Work Stress in Nurses: A Systematic Review

SUMMARY Purpose: This study was carried out to review the studies published between January 2006 and March 2023 on the effect of mindfulness-based training programs applied to nurses on work stress and to systematically examine the data obtained from the studies. Methods: In order to determine the effect of mindfulness-based training programs on work stress in nurses, PubMed, Proquest, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Science Direct, EBSCO host and Cochrane databases were searched between 01.01.2006 and 06.03.2023. The search was in English and was conducted using 3 keywords (nurse, awareness, job stress). As a result of the search, 66,633 articles were reached and 6 studies were included in the study. Studies were evaluated using the PRISMA checklist. As a result of the literature review, 6 articles including 450 participants were included in the review. All of the evaluated studies focused on mindfulness-based training programs. Results: Considering the content of a total of 6 studies included in this study, in general; It is noteworthy that after the training, the awareness levels of nurses increased, their job stress levels decreased, their job satisfaction and patient care quality increased, their burnout, anxiety and depression levels decreased, and their sleep quality increased. It was determined that MBSR education reduced the anxiety and depression levels of nurses and played an important role in increasing their awareness levels and sleep quality significantly. In addition, with the data obtained, it was found that the mindfulness-based stress reduction program also reduced sleep problems and fatigue levels. Conclusion: The studies examined showed that mindfulness-based stress reduction program significantly reduced work stress in nurses. After the training, it was observed that the quality of patient care increased with the decrease in work stress in nurses.
