Neglected tropical diseases: exploring long term practical approaches to achieve sustainable disease elimination and beyond

Abstract: BackgroundRemarkable progress has been made in the fight against neglected tropical diseases, but new challenges have emerged. Innovative diagnostics, better drugs and new insecticides are often identified as the priority; however, access to these new tools may not be sufficient to achieve and sustain disease elimination, if certain challenges and priorities are not considered.Main bodyThe authors summarise key operational challenges, and based on these, identify two major priorities: strengthening the capacit… Show more

“…However, there have been few reports of reemergence of LF infection in Sri Lanka ( 5 ). Preventive chemotherapy is still needed in all other countries endemic for this disease and has not achieved the desired levels of coverage as of 2017 ( 6 , 7 ). As in Sri Lanka, there is fear of reemergence of the infection in areas where MDA was given, mainly due to subject noncompliance ( 8 11 ).…”

“…Although they are few compared to other fields in health science, NTD researchers have made a lot of advances in disease comprehension and novel tools for prophylaxis, diagnosis, and treatment, including vector control, vaccines, diagnostic tests, and new drugs. Without these new tools, NTD control and elimination will not happen [5,6].…”

“…Progress towards the streamlined integration of data collection on skin infections when planning MDAs for other infections needs ongoing prioritisation. MDA for trachoma and yaws with azithromycin may also reduce the burden of impetigo , whilst ivermectin MDA for lymphatic filariasis and scabies will reduce scabies and impetigo prevalence as part of the roadmap towards defeating neglected tropical diseases . This pragmatic, evidence‐based strategy is now being tested in larger populations with results awaited (ACTRN12618000461291p) to inform whether community control of scabies will prevent severe skin infections.…”
