Neighborhood Norms, Disadvantage, and Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration

Abstract: Most theoretical treatments of intimate partner violence (IPV) focus on individual‐level processes. More recently, scholars have begun to examine the role of macrolevel factors. Results of that research indicate that social ties facilitate the diffusion of cultural norms—including tolerance of deviance/violence—across neighborhoods. Yet the influence of the neighborhood normative climate extends beyond norms regarding the use of violence, shaping cultural understanding about dating and the opposite sex. Using … Show more

“…Fourteen and seven studies, respectively, examined the influence of social norms on men’s IPV perpetration and women’s victimization. Finally, excluding one article (Copp et al, 2019), all included studies found at least one notable relationship between the proxy measure of norms and the violence-related outcome of interest.…”

“…Only six studies performed due diligence to assess the share of variance observed in the outcome that could be attributed to the variance between groups. In all cases, this was achieved by estimating the ICC in an empty model, where no other covariates besides the reference groups were included in the regression analysis predicting the outcome (Beckmann et al, 2019; Benebo et al, 2018; Clark et al, 2018; Copp et al, 2019; Linos et al, 2013; Vyas & Heise, 2016). However, despite calculating the ICC for the outcome, the value was not always correctly interpreted.…”

“…Attitudes towards intimate partner violence also influenced these same-sex IPV cases. They were closely linked to factors such as gender, gender roles, behaviors, cultural norms, and familial and societal views (Copp et al, 2019 ). Minority stressors are relevant in understanding IPV in same-sex relationships (Longobardi & Badenes-Ribera, 2017 ).…”

“…However, exploiting the fact that many survey questionnaires ask respondents about their attitudes toward and perpetration or experiences of IPV, a growing number of studies have used some aggregate measure of attitudes or behaviors to serve as a proxy for a norm. For example, recent studies from Nigeria, Mozambique, and the U.S., created a community-level norm proxy—by aggregating a measure of individual-level attitudinal acceptance of IPV for each community—to assess the relationship between the community-level “norm” and a women’s likelihood of experiencing IPV (Antai & Adaji, 2012; Benebo, Schumann, & Vaezghasemi, 2018; Cau, 2017; Copp et al, 2019; Linos et al, 2013). Similar analyses have been conducted in the U.S., the West Bank, and Honduras using non-community-based reference groups, such as classrooms, families, or municipalities (Beckmann et al, 2019; Schuster et al, 2019; Shakya et al, 2016).…”
