“…Moreover, an icaADBC mutant did not show reduced viru-lence compared to the wild type in a guinea pig tissue cage model (4,7). These data collectively suggest that PIA-independent mechanisms of biofilm accumulation must exist.…”

“…Future studies will therefore, on one hand, have to address the question of how S. epidermidis biofilm architecture is modulated by the simultaneous presence of PIA, Aap, and Embp. On the other hand, it is important to highlight the finding of epidemiologic surveys and animal studies showing that in specific biofilm-related infections (e.g., prosthetic joint infections), PIA is not essential for S. epidermidis virulence (4,7,8,34). In this study, we showed that Aap and Embp apparently can functionally replace PIA, and it is tempting to speculate that depending on the particular infection site, exhibiting unique local conditions, different intercellular adhesins and biofilm architectures contribute differently to S. epidermidis pathogenesis.…”

“…Investigations using a mouse foreign body and rat catheter-related models found that PIA-negative strains were less virulent (74,87,90). However, three separate studies employing guinea pig tissue cage models of infection showed no difference in virulence with non-PIA producing strains (91)(92)(93). The type of infection generated in each model can explain in part these differences.…”

“…Finally, the absorbance was measured with a spectrophotometer at 570 nm. This quantity is directly proportional to the number of cells with an intact membrane Ali Chokr has identified and characterized the properties of these strains and deposited it to be enclosed within the collection of microorganisms of Pasteur Institute in 2007 [19][20][21] . The other strains were ATCC that were stored in glycerol stocks at -80°C and used as required.…”
