NEK2 promotes hepatocellular carcinoma migration and invasion through modulation of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition

Abstract: Never in mitosis gene-A (NIMA)-related expressed kinase 2 (NEK2) has been recently reported to play a role in tumor progression, drug resistance and tumorigenesis. However, little is known about the effects of NEK2 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) metastasis and the underlying mechanism. NEK2 expression levels were examined by immunochemistry, qRT-PCR and western blot analyses in HCC cell lines and HCC tissues. A Transwell assay was used to determine the migration and invasion capacity of NEK2-silenced or NEK… Show more

“…Endometrial carcinoma is one of the most common gynaecological cancers worldwide (19,20). Although previous studies have reported that multiple aberrantly expressed genes in endometrial carcinoma could contribute to the malignant behavior (15,2124), novel markers that are able to identify tumor progression and predict the aggressive phenotype are still urgently required.…”

“…Zhang et al found that NEK2 significantly enhanced the invasive ability of HCC cells, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition played a pivotal role in the NEK2-mediated promotion of HCC cell invasion. 28 Zhang et al demonstrated that NEK2 may regulate proliferation, apoptosis, and other biological behaviors of HepG2 cells via the mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathway. 40 Tsunoda et al showed that interfering with or silencing Figure 5 Forest plot of hRs for the association between high niMa-related kinase 2 (neK2) expression and disease-free survival in cancer patients by different cancer types.…”

“…In the full-text review of the remaining 14 articles, 4 studies were further excluded since the articles did not provide extractable data. Finally, 10 previously published articles and our current cohort study were included in the meta-analysis [25,30,32,[39][40][41][42][43][44][45]. The details of the literature selection process are presented in Fig.…”

“…All reports were published between 2016 and 2018. In addition to our cohort study, 9 of the previous studies were conducted in China [25,32,[39][40][41][42][43][44][45], and 1 in Japan [30]. The case numbers in each study ranged between [30,32,39,42,45], and 5 referring to liver cirrhosis [32,41,42,44,45].…”
