Nekton community of the Scotia Sea as sampled by the RMT 25 during austral summer

Abstract: The nekton community was sampled by a Rectangular Midwater Trawl (RMT 25) over the upper 1000 m of the Scoha Sea dunng January 1991 A total of 81 nekton and rmcronekton species were collected from 2 sites, one In the oceanlc western Scoha Sea (Stn 1) and the other on the northwestern slope of the South Georgla shelf (Stn 2). Specles composibon, abundance, blomass and d a y h g h t verbcal distnbubon were investigated. Crustaceans were the most Important group in terms of species numbers (28 species) followed b… Show more

“…The Antarctic species has been provisionally identified as B. picta (Roper et al 1985), but according to Nesis (1987), who refers to it as the notalianAntarctic "B. riisei", this is almost certainly a new species. Here we record it as Brachioteuthis ?picta, which is consistent with previous references to the same species (Rodhouse 1990;Rodhouse et al 1992a;Piatkowski et al 1994). Brachioteuthis ?picta and Galiteuthis gIacialis is shown in Fig.…”

“…1. The hydrography is described in detail in Piatkowski et al (1994). Dorsal mantle length (ML) and arm lengths, from the oral side of the most proximal sucker to the arm tip (ALI-ALIV), of all cephalopods were measured with Vernier calipers to 0.1 ram.…”

“…One of the major evolutionary outcomes of the isolation of the Southern Ocean is that there are few epipelagic oceanic species (Knox, 2007). Mesopelagic species are present throughout much of the Southern Ocean and can have an important role in regional epipelagic food webs (Ainley et al, 1992;Eastman, 1993;Piatkowski et al, 1994;Pakhomov et al, 1996;Duhamel, 1998;Duhamel et al, 2000;Pusch et al, 2004;Collins et al, 2012;Murphy et al, 2013).…”
